Blazers Win Conference Opener Over North Texas in Five Sets

The Blazers earned its first conference win in a five-set thriller at North Texas Sunday afternoon.


"Today's win was a total team win," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "We've been saying since the beginning of this year that it is going to take all 16 members of our roster to be successful. Abby Carlilestepped up and brought great leadership and spark when we really needed it."


UAB (2-2, 1-0) came out strong in the first set and jumped to a 6-5 lead. The Blazers went on a six-point run to go up by 10 with sophomore Grace Koperserving three aces. North Texas (1-3, 0-1) went on a four-point run of their own at the end of the set to bring the match within five. UAB claimed the last point of a kill by Caroline Stogner to win the set, 25-19.


The Mean Green opened set two 3-1 and never lost the lead from that point. Lidya Canturk had back-to-back aces to bring the set within one (11-10). North Texas closed out the set with a five-point run, 25-16 to tie the match at one.


In the third set, UAB never trailed with the set only being tied three times. Fernanda Maida had two aces in the set for a team total of four. Two four-point runs late in the set helped bring the point for the Blazers 25-17.


Set four went the way of the Mean Green. They jumped out to a 18-9 lead and kept the pressure on the Blazers to a 25-16 set win.


As the match came down the fifth set, UAB had a 5-2 lead from three kills by Maida and two by Carlile and never looked back. The Blazers ended the set off a kill from Carlile 15-9, for the 3-2 match win.


The Blazers return for match two against the Mean Green tomorrow afternoon. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. and broadcasted on CUSA.TV.


NOTEABLES

- The win marks the first time the Blazers have won in Denton. It also marks the first win against North Texas since 2013.

- Maida tallied a team-high 14 kills. Freshman Caroline Stogner set a career-high 10 kills. Carlile had a season-high eight kills.

- Canturk led the Blazers with 21 assists. Erin Powers had a match-high 13 digs.
