This fall’s Oct. 9 football Saturday in Birmingham isn’t your average football Saturday in the city.
Not after the Birmingham City Council voted this week to bring the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic to the Magic City and Legion Field.
What does that mean? Other than a rabid fan base from the two historically black universities visiting the Birmingham area?
Lots and lots of fans coming to town, according to Council President William Parker. But not just for Morehouse-Tuskegee, an annual HBCU rivalry that has traditionally been played in Columbus, Ga.
While Morehouse and Tuskegee play on Oct. 9 at Legion Field, UAB will play host to Florida Atlantic at Protective Stadium located near the Uptown District. The Blazers christen their new digs on Oct. 2 against Hugh Freeze and his Liberty Flames.
Throw in Miles’ homecoming game Oct. 9 against Benedict and city officials can easily explain their optimism that over 100,000 fans will converge on Birmingham that weekend. It doesn’t hurt that national champion Alabama will be on the road that Saturday at Texas A&M. Down the road a couple hours away Auburn will host Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The city council enticed the Morehouse-Tuskegee rivalry moving out of Columbus by approving $500,000 in incentives and in-kind support.
“We want to build it up to where it’s a week-long celebration of empowerment, conferences, pep rallies and tailgating, a family reunion – with the finale being the game on October 9th,” Parker told Bham Now. “It’s a great rivalry, and we’re glad to be hosting it here in the city of Birmingham, and specifically at Legion Field, the football capital of the South.”
The city will host the game for the next three years according to the agreement between Birmingham and the SIAC rivals. The deal could be renewed for two additional one-year terms, subject to an appropriation by the council in each corresponding fiscal year’s budget
